Representative James White Files Bill Strengthening E-Verify
A program ensuring verification of work authorization

AUSTIN, TEXAS– Today Representative James White filed HB 1730 a bill regarding the federal electronic verification of work authorization program, or E-Verify.

“There is a national conversation underway in our nation about immigration and enforcement of our laws,” said Representative White. “This bill is just one step in improving our system of enforcement and verification, which must be part of the ongoing conversation on immigration reform.”

HB 1730 states that a state agency may not award state contractors for goods and services in Texas unless they are registered with and participating in the Federal E-Verify program already in place.  Contractors must continue to be a part of the program throughout the entire term of their contract with the state agency. Failure to comply with the law will result in a business in violation being referred to the Comptroller for investigation. Any business found in violation can be removed from receiving state contracts for up to one year of consideration.

“With the current condition of our national economy, it is critical we do what we can to secure our economic future.  This is a simple bill that goes a long way towards providing an honest and transparent system for companies that stay within the law to work with the state on projects to improve our everyday lives, and is first and foremost an effort to make sure citizens of Texas are the ones being employed with their own tax dollars,” said Representative White.

Representative White is the Member of the Texas House of Representatives for District 19, composed of Polk, Tyler, Jasper, Newton, and Hardin counties.
